SK Hynix to Pay 60% of Employee Bonuses in Company Stock Under Tentative Deal

South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix has reached a tentative wage agreement with its workers that will see 60% of employee performance bonuses paid in company shares and 40% paid in cash. The agreement is still subject to union approval.

The unusual compensation structure comes with SK Hynix benefiting from the explosive growth in demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are key components in artificial intelligence data centres and advanced AI processors.

Under the proposed arrangement, 40 percent of the bonus would come in cash and 40 percent shares which can be immediately cashed out. The other 20 percent would be deferred stock compensation, half of which comes after 1 year and the rest after 2 years.

But the bonus structure was much more cash-based and not as much equity based in the early days of the deal. The change in company stock might help SK Hynix manage the huge cash needs for employee bonuses while also giving workers a greater stake in the company’s future performance.

The bonus issue has become even more pressing since SK Hynix’s profits have soared with the global AI boom. Demand for advanced memory products, especially HBM used in AI accelerators, changed the earnings outlook for the company.

The tentative agreement also covers a 6.3 percent increase in base salaries and improvements to employee welfare benefits. SK Hynix will also have to defer up to 3% of wages for losses, said the company.

The talks have attracted so much attention because workers were worried they were going to receive a lot of their pay in shares. Stock prices vary widely. Because employees earn equity and not cash, they are exposed to the stock market.

The agreement is part of SK Hynix’s massive shareholder-return program. It also announced that it will buy back and cancel 40 trillion won (US$28.6 billion) of its own shares. It also plans to return more than half of its free cash flow over 2025 to 2027 to shareholders on its shares.

The stock buyback announcement has only shown SK Hynix's very strong financial position after the AI-driven semiconductor boom.

The compensation agreement also reflects the broader trend in South Korea’s technology industry where high semiconductor profit has forced companies to distribute the gains to employees, shareholders, and investment programs.

SK Hynix’s agreement is also significant because it had previously agreed to distribute 10% of annual operating profit to employee bonuses under a long-term profit-sharing model. And the new deal changes how compensation will be paid— and doesn’t eliminate the profit-sharing principle.

The stock component might eventually be valuable for employees, because SK Hynix still benefits from strong AI-based semiconductor demand. But equity compensation is very much tied to the company's share price and not a guaranteed cash bonus.

This union approval process will have to be passed before it can be finalized. But until then, the 60% stock and 40% cash structure is only a tentative agreement.

But the development shows just how much the AI boom has changed the economics of the semiconductor industry as a whole. SK Hynix is investing heavily in advanced memory production, paying employees well in all areas and returning huge amounts of capital to shareholders.

With AI infrastructure demand still reshaping the global chip market, SK Hynix’s decision to convert most of its employee bonuses into company stock could prove to be an important example of how semiconductor companies are finding a way to balance record profits, employee compensation and shareholder returns.
