JioBlackRock Asset Management is adding regular plans for mutual funds from August 17, giving investors another way to access their schemes through mutual fund distributors, financial advisers, and registered intermediaries.

Until now, JioBlackRock has only offered direct plans. The implementation of regular plans is a key step in the company’s strategy to build a broader investor base and establish itself in India’s mutual fund distribution network.
JioBlackRock CEO Sid Swaminathan said the move would bring in more investors while also adding digital investment services to the company’s offerings.
“The introduction of Regular Plans is a step forward in expanding access to our solutions, giving investors greater choice in how they invest and allowing us to partner with India’s dynamic distribution ecosystem,” Swaminathan said.
But for investors, there is more to regular and direct plans than just one investment strategy. The two plans usually are based on the same underlying scheme but work with different cost structures.
What are regular Mutual Fund plans?
In a regular mutual fund plan, an investor buys the scheme through an intermediary such as a mutual fund distributor or financial adviser. The distributor is paid for the service by commission that is reflected in the fund's expenses.
As a result, regular plans generally have a higher expense ratio than their direct plans.
The extra cost may seem negligible on an annual basis, but it can be quite substantial over a long investment period as mutual fund returns compound over time.
For instance, even if an investor stays invested for 15 or 20 years, even a small increase in annual expenses might reduce the final corpus. The effect becomes more noticeable as the investment amount and investment duration increase.
Direct Plans vs Regular Plans
Direct plans are designed for investors who purchase mutual funds without going through a distributor. Since there is no distributor commission built into the expense structure, direct plans generally have lower expense ratios than regular plans of the same scheme.
This can potentially translate into slightly better net returns over a period of time, if the underlying investments perform similarly.
But direct plans also make investors take more responsibility for their investment decisions. Investors should research schemes, identify their risk profile, monitor their portfolios, and handle transactions themselves or use platforms to facilitate direct investments.
Regular plans, on the other hand, provide access to professional assistance through distributors or advisers. This can be particularly helpful for investors who are new to mutual funds or prefer guidance while choosing and managing investments.
Who could benefit from JioBlackRock’s regular plans?
Regular plans may help new mutual fund investors who prefer personal guidance rather than managing their investments independently.
Investors also might appreciate regular plans for financial planning, portfolio reviews, documentation, and other investment-related processes.
For investors who are less comfortable researching mutual fund schemes on their own, the extra cost associated with a regular plan may be viewed as the price of receiving distribution and advisory support.
Moreover, before choosing regular plans, investors need to know what services a distributor or adviser is providing.
Long-Term Investors Need to Watch Costs
For investors who are comfortable making their own investment decisions, direct plans may still be an attractive option because of the lower expense ratio.
The main consideration is the long-term effect of costs. Mutual funds are generally designed for creating long-term wealth, and expenses deducted from investments can compound over time.
A small annual difference in expenses may have a very significant impact on the final investment corpus over 20 years.
Investors should compare the expense ratios of the regular and direct versions of a scheme and consider the value of any professional assistance they receive.
More choices for Mutual Fund Investors
JioBlackRock now has regular plans to serve both independently minded investors and those who prefer to invest with professional assistance.
The expansion also gives distributors and financial advisers a platform to offer JioBlackRock’s schemes to their clients.
The investment knowledge, financial goals, and whether an investor would have the ability to manage a portfolio independently should be the deciding factors in choosing between a regular and direct plan.
For investors in need of guidance and ongoing help, a regular plan may provide some convenience and support. Those who are confident about researching and managing their investments themselves may prefer the less expensive route.
JioBlackRock will have opportunities to grow in India’s mutual fund market, and so will investors. But regardless of the route they choose, understanding expense ratios and their long-term impact must be taken into account when making a mutual fund investment decision.
