Alibaba Plunges as $10.2 Billion Share Placement Sparks Dilution Fears Amid Massive AI Spending

Alibaba shares fell more than 10 per cent on Hong Kong yesterday as the beleaguered Chinese technology giant announced a giant $10.2 billion share placement to fund its AI ambitions.

The selloff came after Alibaba offered 710 million new shares at HK$112.70 each in the market, down 8.4 percent from the company’s previous close at HK$123.70. The deal will raise about HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion), the biggest follow-on deal by a Hong Kong-listed company, according to Reuters.

The immediate market reaction was negative and investors were concerned about the dilution of the new shares and the huge amount of capital Alibaba continues to invest in artificial intelligence.

Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares fell as much as 10% during Monday’s trading session, which is one of the biggest drags on the technology sector as a whole. And investors were worried about the cost and prospects of returns of AI investment in the sector were evident in a sharp fall in Hong Kong and Chinese stock market falling as well.

$10.2 Billion To AI

Alibaba has made it clear that the new capital is not for general corporate purposes. It said 100% of the net proceeds from the placement will be used to build up its AI capabilities, including AI infrastructure.

The move is just the kind that shows how aggressively Alibaba is positioning itself in the global AI game. It is investing in AI models, computing infrastructure, chips and cloud services as it tries to turn its Qwen AI ecosystem and cloud business into a platform for future growth.

The spending has raised questions about profitability and capital allocation; however, the scale of the spending has raised.

The financial impact of this strategy could be seen in Alibaba’s latest quarterly results. The company’s quarterly net profit fell 75% year-on-year to around 10.5 billion yuan, down from 43.1 billion yuan a year earlier. Capital expenditure rose nearly 75% to 67.7 billion yuan, and the majority of that was due to AI infrastructure investments.

The contrast is stark: Alibaba is spending significantly more on AI than it did before and its profits are much lower than they ever were.

AI revenue is growing— but so are costs

The company is not investing in AI without seeing growth. Alibaba's cloud and AI-related businesses are growing exponentially.

Cloud revenue increased by about 45% during the current quarter with the company continuing to grow and develop its Qwen family of AI models.

And investors will have to decide if this is going to lead to cash flow and profits to justify so much capital investment.

Alibaba had already put an estimated 380 billion yuan budget for AI and cloud infrastructure over the next three years. Reuters reported that the company has already spent nearly half of that planned capital expenditure budget, which further accelerates the pace of investment.

That means investors are increasingly looking at the key question: How fast can Alibaba turn AI infrastructure spending into sustainable earnings?

Why the Share Placement Hurt Sentiment

A discounted share placement can be especially unpopular with existing shareholders because issuing new shares increases the total number of shares outstanding. Existing investors therefore face dilution unless the additional capital ultimately generates enough growth to offset the effect.

Alibaba in particular has an additional problem with timing: The company announced the big fundraising just days after it reported a dramatic drop in quarterly profit.

It is therefore the market balancing two competing narratives.

Alibaba is investing aggressively in one of the world’s most important technology trends on one side. Its cloud business is growing quickly, and its Qwen AI models are becoming an increasingly important part of its technology strategy.

The company is investing huge amounts of capital but profitability is under pressure. Investors now need to see if AI investment returns are at least so high.

And the share placement was highly subscribed, indicating institutional investors still support Alibaba’s AI ambitions. Demand for the sale was much higher than the amount raised, Reuters reported.

Alibaba is an important test of the AI spending race.

Alibaba’s move reflects a larger trend among large technology companies: spending heavily today in the hope of winning a dominant position in AI tomorrow.

The strategy has substantial upfront costs. Data centers require huge investments in computing equipment, networking infrastructure and energy, while advanced AI models require ongoing investments in chips and research.

Next, Alibaba will have to show how those investments can lead to cloud revenues, AI services and ultimately better profitability.

So Monday’s sharp stock slide shows investor demands are getting more and more demanding of this equation.

The company has raised $10.2 billion more but the market reacts to it in terms of shareholders looking for evidence that the money can make a real return.

Alibaba’s AI ambitions are still big, its spending is growing and its profit is at least for now under pressure. The next quarters may help to determine if Alibaba’s spending-based investment program will be a long-term growth engine or a cost for shareholders.
