Opendoor CEO Kaz Nejatian Confirms India Exit, Operations Shift to U.S.

Opendoor CEO Kaz Nejatian has confirmed the company will shut down India operations and announced a major restructuring move. In a note to employees on Tuesday and later posted publicly on X, there was a lot of talk about outsourcing in the age of artificial intelligence.

Nejatian said that Opendoor’s customers are based in the U.S., and therefore operational work should also be consolidated there. Almost 250 employees in India will be affected as it transitions to AI‑enabled teams that can do things more efficiently without manual workflows.

The CEO emphasized that the closure was not due to performance issues and he praised India's contributions as the reason for the change. He said the move is part of “Opendoor 2.0,” a broader restructuring strategy, which is the strategy of consolidating operations and reducing fragmentation and creating a unified platform for U.S. homeowners more effectively.

The announcement has raised concerns about job security in India’s outsourcing sector, which has long been a hub for global companies looking for cost-effective help. Analysts believe Opendoor’s move is a manifestation of a growing trend in which AI takes away the need for offshore teams, and could impact employment in the industry in the future.

Reactions have been mixed. Supporters of the decision argue that more effective and efficient operations at a customer level will be achieved by bringing operations more closely together and therefore improving the quality of service. But critics say that the sudden closure underlines the vulnerability of offshore workers and the need for stronger protections in global employment policies.

Finally, Opendoor’s exit from India marks a significant change in strategy. The company will also be using technology for the future as it is betting on AI‑driven efficiency and proximity to U.S. customers to keep things modern and efficient. That is innovation but also poses a big question of the balance between progress and employment in outsourcing hubs.
