Government Incentivises Inter-Caste Marriages With Up to ₹2.5 Lakh Support

India is also actively promoting inter-caste marriages through the Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Inter‑Caste Marriages which gives couples up to ₹2.5 lakh as direct benefit transfer. This central initiative is to build social harmony and remove caste-based barriers and several states have their own schemes with different benefits.

Under the national scheme, couples who are married to one of those who belongs to a Scheduled Caste and one of the other to a non-Scheduled Caste will be eligible for assistance if the marriage is legally registered. The ₹2.5 lakh incentive is a mechanism to promote social integration and help newly married couples start their life together as couples.

State-level programs and other interventions complement the central programme. In Bihar couples receive around ₹1 lakh in financial assistance. Rajasthan has the most generous program support with up to ₹5 lakh in some cases. Gujarat also provides financial aid under its state program, which is a way of making sure that people are not left behind at the door of social inclusion.

Other major states have similar initiatives. In Karnataka, the government provides financial support for inter‑caste couples, often linked with welfare programs for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Maharashtra has a scheme that offers monetary assistance to couples, with the goal of overcoming caste discrimination and promoting equality. Similar schemes that are done in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala are also similar with different eligibility criteria and financial slabs.

The schemes are not without challenges. Stricter documentation requirements, verification delays and social stigma can keep couples from applying.

But such financial support is a major motivation, especially the case in rural areas where caste barriers are still very strong. Couples can get significant support from a central and state level by combining central and state level, reducing their financial need and promoting the idea of social integration.

Finally, India’s multi‑tiered approach (Dr. Ambedkar Scheme and state-specific programs) is a strong model of inter-caste marriages. With benefits of ₹1 lakh in Bihar to ₹5 lakh in Rajasthan and help in states such as Karnataka and Maharashtra, these programmes are intended to promote equality, reduce caste division and empower couples to build inclusive futures.
