Kisan Samriddhi is over 12 years old and is a bridge from the welfare of farmers to farmer prosperity. In the past ten years, the Modi government has taken a number of measures that empower the annadata, stabilize financial stability, and protect against risks.

At the heart of the transformation is the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi scheme which offers direct income assistance of ₹6,000 annually to eligible farmers. PM-KISAN has helped millions to get finance in a timely manner by reducing middlemen’s transaction costs and increasing transparency through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme. PM-KISAN has been a lifeline for small and marginal farmers to meet their agricultural expenses and household needs.
To supplement this empowerment, the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme is also being strengthened and expanded. The KCC has reduced farmers’ reliance on informal lenders as it provides institutional credit at very low interest rates and allows them to invest in modern farming methods and equipment and manage seasonal expenses better. The government’s investment in the KCC coverage has helped accelerate the growth of formal credit systems for farmers as well as for the country as a whole.
The crop insurance policy is just as important as it is a safety net to help farmers protect against weather, natural disasters, and market fluctuations. In schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), farmers receive compensation in case of crop loss, reducing financial strain and encouraging more risk-taking in agriculture. It has reinforced farmers’ confidence to experiment with new techniques and crops.
Together, these three pillars empowerment through PM-KISAN, the establishment of Kisan Credit Card, and security with crop insurance have changed the agricultural landscape. The government’s sustained focus on farmer-centric policies has solved immediate problems but also laid the groundwork for sustainable prosperity.
Kisan Samriddhi’s 12-year journey is a microcosm of a larger vision of transforming India’s agriculture sector. The Modi government has helped build confidence in farmers’ lives by helping them get credit and protecting them from risks—so the annadata is progressing again. It is not only a celebration of welfare schemes but a testimony to the transition from farmer welfare to farmer prosperity.
